Harewood Estate – Learn more about the 2021 Vintage!

By: SVS Categories: Reviews and Awards, Wines

The purpose of Harewood Estate is to demonstrate the diversity and capacity of the Great Southern Region of Western Australia.

These wines were highly awarded by critics and are produced in small amounts. Due to the scarcity of this new vintage, they sell out every year.

Harewood Estate New Vintage

The Riesling vintage at Harewood Estate has been developed to showcase the diversity of their wines.  ‘Riesling is such a “grown” wine, it is made in the vineyard’, says James Kellie, winemaker and owner of Harewood Estate.

“Each year I harvest the fruit in the different vineyards, on different days, according to “mouthfeel”.  When I think the fruit is ripe, and balanced and just plain ready.  Then we ferment the wines in exactly the same way, same yeast, same temperature of ferment, same amount of time on skins.  The only difference in winemaking is that I do reserve the right to “turn up the fridge” to stop the ferment when I feel the acid / sugar balance is right, for each particular wine.  In this way, the difference you taste between the wines, really is just the difference in “terroir” (the conditions in each vineyard, in that growing year).

Trying the wines as a flight is the best way to experience the difference across the Great Southern.

The Vineyard

“The coldest vineyard is quite high in Porongurups, followed by the coastal fruit from Denmark (where the Southern Ocean has a moderating effect).  Further inland the warmer influences in Mt Barker and Frankland River are quite apparent, in the extra generosity of fruit.

In 2021 we aren’t presenting a Frankland River wine, there was a massive frost in November 2020 which wiped out the harvest.  Tunney is a town just out ide the Frankland River boundary and we have sourced some fruit from there this year.  This vineyard has a history of producing wines that age incredibly well, so it’s really exciting to make some wine from there and see how it turns out, especially as the years progress.”  James Kellie Harewood Estate.

So there you have it folks Riesling at it’s most sublime, from one of the master’s of the grape, at the top of his form.
